Today is World Day Against Trafficking Persons, a topic I've been passionate about for years. Over time, I've heard countless questions and comments regarding human trafficking.
"Doesn't that only happen in other countries?"
"That couldn't happen here in Ohio."
"They're choosing that life, right?"
These statements couldn't be further from the truth.
Despite the abolition of slavery in 1865, the United States now has more slaves than ever before in history. Yes, it's happening right here in the Mahoning Valley. But you shouldn't need to see current cases or STING operations catching criminals to believe it.
So, what can we do about human trafficking?
The most important action you can take is to advocate for trafficking victims. Many across the U.S. believe it doesn't happen in our country, let alone in our communities, among our friends, and within our families.
Another crucial step is to support organizations that aid those vulnerable to trafficking and provide aftercare services for survivors.
A new 501c3 non-profit, FreeThree, has recently opened to support Mahoning, Trumble, and Columbiana counties. FreeThree offers services for vulnerable individuals and survivors of trafficking.
Identifying vulnerabilities is crucial. Factors like a turbulent home life, absentee parents, young age, or challenging neighborhoods can increase susceptibility to trafficking.
We must recognize these vulnerabilities and show individuals that they are loved and valued before traffickers exploit them.

This October 19th, the entire world participates in an A21 Walk for Freedom, raising awareness for human trafficking. Mark your calendars, because we're hosting another walk for the third year in Youngstown.
Follow FreeThree on social media to stay up to date on all events and other programs where you could get involved.
